Our Story

Karen Ann brings the experience of baking bread and buns from her mother’s kitchen during her childhood years in Newfoundland. There’s just nothing quite like tearing into a warm fresh loaf of bread with butter and homemade jam. It is one of the most satisfying culinary experiences. A Newfoundland traditional favorite of ours is a scoff of toutons (sounds like Pout-ins) (a fried bread dough dripping with butter and molasses). John’s mother’s scones are another huge family favorite. One she carried with her from England to Ontario, where she raised her family. At every gathering we welcomed the smell of scones in the oven and the sound of the kettle whistling. It signals comfort and connection with the past and with each other in the present. When we lived near Montreal we discovered the French Canadian meat pie, tourtiere. Moving to North Carolina, we were soon introduced to Eastern North Carolina BBQ, a Southern U.S. culinary experience. A deliciously slow cooked pork shoulder, juicy and tender with a sauce we’ve learned to make. It is sensational with or without a freshly baked bun. With our life’s culinary experiences, we hope to bring a unique flair and taste that will be welcomed and enjoyed while we continue to expand our menu in Nova Scotia.

Our vision is to provide a place that would be welcoming and comforting. A place to join friends and family. A place to linger that allows you to relax and unwind. In a world that is increasingly stressful, we want to create an environment that is not. We want to share our love for tea and coffee, fresh baked goods and nourishing food with you. When you walk through the bright yellow door of Broad Cove Cafe, we want you to feel invited to a maritime atmosphere of warmth and hospitality to refresh and rejuvenate. With carefully selected coffees, teas and items on the menu with you in mind, we want you to return…again and again.

We welcome you to be a part of our story at the Broad Cove Cafe
